Skill Development Workshops
Solo Play Creation
facilitated by Johanna Nutter
Sunday, September 16, 1-3 p.m.
Only 8 spots available, contact email@example.com or 205-586-2236 to register.
This workshop will be an exploration of solo performance through four main lenses. We will look at audiences: discovering who they are to you and how you want to talk to them. We will examine heroes: tracing the myths of your own life and those of the people you want to enact. We will also study mechanics: understanding how you write and what your creation process wants to be. Finally, we’ll consider conclusions: learning how not to come to them, how to let the story speak for itself. Be prepared to write and to play with Johanna Nutter, writer, actor and Artistic Director of Freestanding Productions.
Johanna Nutter had her first role at the age of two in her father’s NFB film, Loose Associations. She trained with Actors’ Studio alumnus Warren Robertson (who taught Jessica Lange and Robert De Niro) for ten years and has appeared in numerous film and theatre productions, including the roles of Sarah Schorr in Trying (Victoria Playhouse) and Eunice Kennedy in Jackie Kennedy: A Life (CBS). As well as being the founder and artistic director of Freestanding Productions, she is also the acting president and concierge of The Freestanding Room, a member-driven studio space in Montreal, dedicated to giving emerging artists a place to create.
Play Creation – The Collaborative Process

Create an idea map in the early stages of planning that will lead an artistic team through the period leading up to opening night with integrity and purpose. Articulate and integrate each of the artistic partners’ highest aspirations for your next production. Through a series of exercises and working with hexagons create an inclusive vision and build shared goals of all the artistic partners of what the collective wants to say with the play. This method helps to engage the full potential in all company members and often leads to cross-pollination of ideas. As well, all those working on the project have true ownership of the material and a deeper connection to the play.
