FemFest Supports New Work

Where else can you see world premieres, readings of new works in progress and touring shows from not only across Canada but from Afghanistan? This year’s FemFest is shaping up to a be an exciting and unique opportunity to see great theatre. Part of our mandate is to support emerging artists so we are particularly pumped to feature new work by talented writers. Last year the Bake-Off allowed five writers, some new to dramatic writing, to test out their chops. The audience had a hard time voting for a winner because there were several strong pieces and the work was so diverse. Using dress-up, dancing and someone being taught a lesson as starting points resulted in really entertaining work! Although Frances Koncan’s The Dance-Off of Conscious Uncoupling won, it was a close race. Our Artistic Director was approached immediately after the announcement by some avid theatre-goers insisting they wanted to see the full script of Irony by Terrie Todd given development support. Thank goodness that FemFest has room for several playwrights and so this year audiences can check out a reading of the full script of the new play Irony.

ironyThis week we hear from guest blogger Terrie Todd about her journey of taking the script from last year’s Bake-Off and workshopping it into a full script. Read the full blog for Terrie’s thoughts.
